Picking the Ideal Hay Mower

Hay mowers are available in all shapes and sizes, from the largest trailed mower-conditioners and the mini sickle bar mowers to self-propelled machines. Currently, there are three major types of hay mowers: disc, drum and sickle bar. When it comes to picking the hay mower that works best for your circumstances take a look at the three mower options below:

Sickle Bar Mowers

Initially pulled by horses, the sickle bar mower is probably the first and the oldest mower type. Today’s design resembles the original invention. This mower runs with a reciprocating action, whereby it moves its triangular blades between the stationary guard fingers. The great thing about this type of mower is that you can cut hay and undertake other general mowing tasks.

Disc Mowers

This mower was created as an upgrade of the sickle bar design. Its blades don’t move back and forth. Instead, they are installed on multiple small discs attached to the cutter bar, and they rotate at high speeds. Gears or shaft mounted inside the cutter bar runs the discs. The good thing about this mower is that it doesn’t clog and transitions easily.

Drum Mowers

These mowers are very different compared to the others. The drum mower’s ‘drums’ are operated from a gearbox instead of the cutting blades. A drum mower has high ground speeds, it’s durable, it doesn’t need a hydraulic system, and that’s perhaps the reason why many farmers love them.

Picking the Perfect Baler

There are a couple of options to consider when selecting a suitable baler. You might not have a large tractor that can handle a big square baler or a big round baler. So, you might need to consider a smaller baler.

Picking the Best Hay Tedder

Simply put, a tedder is a piece of equipment that spreads and turns over the loose hay in a field. Most tedders incorporate a rotary motion to grab hay with its spinning tines.

Picking a Hay Rake

When baling hay, you must rake it into windrows, and here is where a hay rake comes in handy. The commonly available hay rakes are parallel bar rakes, wheel rakes, belt rakes and rotary rakes.
